The University of Ideas

The University of Kassel is a young and dynamic institution with a wide range of offerings in the natural sciences and engineering, in the social sciences and the humanities as well as in the arts. The University sees itself as an institution at which openness, initiative, interdisciplinary thinking and unconventional approaches are all prized and promoted. This applies to studying, research and teaching as well as to business start-ups, which receive a distinctive degree of support at the University of Kassel. The University is exceedingly well connected in the North Hessen region and in the city of Kassel, one of the economically and culturally most dynamic cities of Germany.

In its approach to teaching, the University of Kassel places particular emphasis on establishing a close connection to real-life applications. Academic qualifications should be directly related to problem-solving capabilities, to openness for professional developments and to practical social skills. A wide range of courses is offered across areas such as the natural sciences, technology, cultural and social studies. Teacher training is also a traditional strength of the University.

Research

At the University of Kassel, scholars, scientists and students confront the big questions of our future – from the effects of globalisation, to managing climate change and sustainable economic systems, to developing new materials and technical systems. The aim here is to develop, test and implement ideas – even when these ideas haven't yet made it to the mainstream. This often calls for an innovative combination of basic research and practical applications as well as interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches.
