Translating Middle High German texts, reinterpreting classics of literary history or analysing digital messages in social media linguistically – all this is part of the curriculum in German studies at the University of Kassel.

The broad spectrum of the Bachelor's degree course scores points with practical relevance and, as a first step, conveys basic knowledge in linguistics, literature and media studies as well as key competences in communication and scientific methodology. Later, an elective module is added, which enables specialisations in the professional field.

For the BA degree course in German Studies, it is suitable to have not only perseverance but also a desire to read and to communicate, as well as a special interest in language. In addition to the promotion of individual expressive skills, language use and analysis are fundamental learning topics. In addition, German scholars like to look beyond the horizon and also work with the findings of neighbouring disciplines – from philosophy and history to psychology and pedagogy to neuroscience or gender research.

Part-time study is quite possible due to the course of study in this degree programme. Upon request, you can register for part-time studies in accordance with Section 19 (2) Hesse Higher Education Act (HessHG). The specific provisions for part-time studies will then apply. Counselling by the subject-specific student advice service is recommended.

    The University of Ideas

The University of Kassel is a young and dynamic institution with a wide range of offerings in the natural sciences and engineering, in the social sciences and the humanities as well as in the arts. The University sees itself as an institution at which openness, initiative, interdisciplinary thinking and unconventional approaches are all prized and promoted. This applies to studying, research and teaching as well as to business start-ups, which receive a distinctive degree of support at the University of Kassel. The University is exceedingly well connected in the North Hessen region and in the city of Kassel, one of the economically and culturally most dynamic cities of Germany.

In its approach to teaching, the University of Kassel places particular emphasis on establishing a close connection to real-life applications. Academic qualifications should be directly related to problem-solving capabilities, to openness for professional developments and to practical social skills. A wide range of courses is offered across areas such as the natural sciences, technology, cultural and social studies. Teacher training is also a traditional strength of the University.

    Research

At the University of Kassel, scholars, scientists and students confront the big questions of our future – from the effects of globalisation, to managing climate change and sustainable economic systems, to developing new materials and technical systems. The aim here is to develop, test and implement ideas – even when these ideas haven't yet made it to the mainstream. This often calls for an innovative combination of basic research and practical applications as well as interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches.
