Dual programmes - Studying and work experience

Dual programmes combine a university course with practical training or work experience with an employer. Unlike part-time courses, in a dual programme the employment and/or training element is an integral part of the course.

If you opt for a dual programme of study at a higher education institution, you must also sign a contract with an employer. Your curriculum will be closely connected to your job, and the course will be completed in two different places.

A dual programme can incorporate trainingemployment or work experience.

Dual programmes – Training component

A dual programme with training component combines a course of study with training in a recognised occupation. In addition to your degree, you will obtain a vocational qualification. As a general rule, to enrol on a dual programme with training component you must have a general university entrance qualification (Allgemeine Hochschulreife or Fachhochschulreife) and a contract of employment.

Dual programmes with employment component

A dual programme with employment component is primarily aimed at people who have already done vocational or professional training and/or already have a number of years of professional experience. It is designed to offer further professional development and combines a course of study with professional experience that is directly relevant to your course. You can enrol on this type of course without a general university entrance qualification (Allgemeine Hochschulreife or Fachhochschulreife). The amount of time the student spends in the classroom and at the place of work is agreed in a contract between the institution, the student and the employer.
