    • Annotation of the Higher Education Institution "What kind of society do we live in?" – This basic question is addressed by sociological analyses of the present day. These analyses respond to a need for interpretation, both within the discipline and in society at large, by highlighting certain social phenomena as characteristic of contemporary society, interpreting them sociologically in a new way, and presenting these interpretations for discussion by both specialists and the wider public. This way of conducting sociological research and the formation of theory is at the centre of the degree course. Its theoretical prerequisites and methodological requirements, the relationship between sociology and society, the requirements of sociological knowledge transfer – all of these are covered in the degree programme.

In line with the focus on sociological analyses of the present day, the degree course is designed to offer a considerable degree of thematic openness, flexibility and research orientation. In addition to teaching theoretical and methodological knowledge about analyses of the present day, an important emphasis is placed on participation in conducting such research in the context of teaching research on changing topics. As part of a "Jour fixe" offered in each semester, students can explore topics in greater depth, organise workshops and discuss their own ideas for their Master’s thesis. The elective courses offer further opportunities for students to set their own priorities in their studies. Courses in the fields of Public Sociology and Scientific Organisation as well as a work placement introduce professional fields that are associated with the skills profile of the degree course.
