      International applicants must submit proof of language proficiency at level DSH-2 in accordance with the "Regulations of Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main on the German Language Proficiency Test for Admission to Higher Education (DSH) for Applicants with Higher education Entrance Qualification from Abroad" in the current valid version, insofar as they are not exempt from the German language examination according to the DSH Regulations. For the Master´s degree programme in German Literature, a good command of English (CEFR: at least B2) and basic knowledge of a second foreign language (CEFR: at least A2) are required.
      German language proficiency can be demonstrated through at least DSH-2 or TestDaF: at least 4/4/4/4.
      English language proficiency at level B2 (CEFR) can be demonstrated through
      - a Bachelor’s degree in American Studies or English Studies or another degree course taught in English in Germany or abroad; or
      - higher education entrance qualification for a country in which English is the official language; or
      - a general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) or equivalent upper secondary school certificates attesting to English language instruction of at least 5 years, with an average grade of at least "sufficient (4.0)" or five points; or
      - a certificate of successfully completed language courses for English from universities in Germany and/or abroad, examiner’s reports, lecturer examinations or certificates obtained during stays abroad, at language schools or from adult education courses (VHS); the required language level must be explicitly mentioned; or
      - a standardised test from which level B2 is clearly visible; the following evidence of language proficiency is recognised:
      a. TOEFL (Internet-based, at least 85 points);
      b. IELTS (at least 5.5 in each part);
      c. Cambridge First, Advanced or Proficiency (at least 160 points).
      - Another certificate recognised as equivalent by the Admissions Committee.
      Knowledge of level A2 (CEFR) in the second foreign language is demonstrated through
      - school reports, at least three years of instruction in the language concerned, with the average grade not being worse than "sufficient" (4.0) and/or five points,
      - a certificate for successfully completed language courses in the relevant language from universities in Germany and/or abroad
      - examiner’s reports, lecturer examinations or certificates.
      - another certificate recognised as equivalent by the Admissions Committee

The examination committee decides on the recognition and comparability of qualifications.
