    • Annotation of the Higher Education Institution The results of international school performance studies, such as PISA, regularly trigger a large media response in Germany. This illustrates the importance of education in Germany and the importance of empirical educational research in the discussion about the further development of the German education system.

However, large-scale school performance studies are only one example of studies of empirical educational research. Other studies, for example, investigate questions of educational and opportunity justice, analyse teaching and learning processes in schools, universities and continuing education, investigate extracurricular educational processes of children and adolescents or reconstruct the interactions of involved actors and structures of underlying processes.

The four-semester master's degree programme in Empirical Educational Research at the Institute of Educational Science introduces students to current practice in empirical educational research and prepares them for responsible positions in both the university and non-university fields. In addition to tasks in research, the graduates course also opens up professional perspectives in the education administration and in evaluation, e.g. in the field of higher education and further education. The graduates of the degree course also include teachers, since the application of findings from empirical educational research is also of great relevance in school practice.

The individual modules of the Master's degree programme provide students with theoretical, conceptual and research methodological skills. The focus of the degree course are the module Methods of Empirical Educational Research and the research internship, which serves many students as a springboard for employment after graduation and for a scientific career. The modules Educational Theory Education and Educational Reform Processes, School and Teaching Research as well as Research in Informal and Non formal Fields of Education provide theoretical foundations and offer interesting insights into current fields of application of empirical educational research. Upon successful completion of the degree course, graduates will be awarded the Master of Arts title, which entitles them to a doctorate.

    The University of Ideas

The University of Kassel is a young and dynamic institution with a wide range of offerings in the natural sciences and engineering, in the social sciences and the humanities as well as in the arts. The University sees itself as an institution at which openness, initiative, interdisciplinary thinking and unconventional approaches are all prized and promoted. This applies to studying, research and teaching as well as to business start-ups, which receive a distinctive degree of support at the University of Kassel. The University is exceedingly well connected in the North Hessen region and in the city of Kassel, one of the economically and culturally most dynamic cities of Germany.

In its approach to teaching, the University of Kassel places particular emphasis on establishing a close connection to real-life applications. Academic qualifications should be directly related to problem-solving capabilities, to openness for professional developments and to practical social skills. A wide range of courses is offered across areas such as the natural sciences, technology, cultural and social studies. Teacher training is also a traditional strength of the University.

    Research

At the University of Kassel, scholars, scientists and students confront the big questions of our future – from the effects of globalisation, to managing climate change and sustainable economic systems, to developing new materials and technical systems. The aim here is to develop, test and implement ideas – even when these ideas haven't yet made it to the mainstream. This often calls for an innovative combination of basic research and practical applications as well as interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches.
