    Geography

  • Field of study
    • Target group Teaching concept / course contents Students are offered a research-oriented Master’s programme with strong practical relevance, which deals with innovative social-scientific approaches in human geography and their adjacent disciplines. The focus is on the discussion of global structures and developments with respect to the economy and cities. The varied programme, which may include project seminars, excursions, workshops and a stay abroad depending on the specialisation, is supplemented by targeted method courses (geo-information system, advanced methods of empirical social research, scientific writing). Course-orientated specialisation Students must complete a greater proportion of attendance classes in this specialisation. This also includes participation in a major excursion as well as a further content module. Students must also complete a work placement. The course-oriented specialisation provides students with the opportunity to complete a comprehensive and broad range of courses on the central contents of the Master’s programme in Tübingen. It is also possible to take a semester abroad in the third semester. Research-oriented specialisation You will plan a research project on a self-selected topic. In an ideal case, this will create an opportunity for research on a more complex subject together with researchers abroad. Alternatively, independent projects are possible. After preparing for the second subject-related semester, you will spend part of the third subject-related semester abroad and finish the project with a research report. At the end of your studies, you can either present two major papers or integrate your data and results into the Master’s thesis, as part of which you can expand on these in terms of substance or empiricism. You are thus familiarised with academic work early on, developing confidence. The Geographical Institute of the University of Tübingen was founded in 1897 when Alfred Hettner was named the first chair of geography. Since 2007, the institute has been housed in the Old Children’s Clinic on Rümelinstrasse. The approximately 700 students are supervised and trained by five professors as well as 45 academic and technical staff.
