„The UdK Berlin is an institution of the 21st century. Arts education and research must be further developed at the highest level - in awareness of the far-reaching processes of change to come. ”

Excellence in the arts and research

The UdK Berlin is one of the few arts universities worldwide that unites all arts disciplines and the related academic studies. In its field, it is an international landmark for teaching and research. The UdK Berlin aims to increase the proportion of 30% international students and increase diversity.
The UdK Berlin has had university status since 2001 and has the right to award doctorates and habilitations. Prof. Dr Norbert Palz has been president since April 2020. The colleges of Fine Arts, Architecture, Media and , Music and Performing Arts, the inter-university centres for Dance (HZT) and Jazz (JIB Berlin) and the Central Institute for Continuing Education/Berlin Career College teach and conduct research in over 70 degree programmes. Close networking with other higher education institutions and cultural institutions in Berlin and international partners promotes research cooperation, exchange and joint degree programmes.

    Artistic excellence

The heart of the UdK Berlin is arts education. Outstandingly staffed professorships in all colleges and the inter-university centres, as well as the ongoing further development of teaching concepts, help to ensure and continuously improve the high level of education in the arts and art-related academic fields at the UdK Berlin.
This also applies to the teacher training programmes in music, fine arts and theatre.
Without compromising on their arts and design disciplines, the faculties promote an overall view of the arts through interdisciplinary projects, common theoretical approaches and the strengthening of academic fields. In this way, the UdK Berlin gives its students the opportunity to engage with and experiment with other art forms at an early stage, in order to recognise and expand the boundaries of their own discipline.

Researching in the space for reflection between arts, humanities, and sciences

The UdK Berlin is a research-intensive arts university: the unique combination of arts and academic subjects leads to a specific research and qualification environment of artistic practice and research, basic research and application orientation. The UdK Berlin has the right to award doctorates and habilitations in its academic disciplines . Facilities such as the Berlin Open Lab and the Hybrid Platform support inter- and transdisciplinary research and transfer projects between the arts, science and technology. The Berlin Centre for Advanced Studies in Arts and Sciences links postgraduate qualifications and research projects within the university. The UdK Berlin is also an important partner in research networks in the Berlin-Brandenburg region on digitalisation and sustainability. In particular, there is close cooperation with Berlin's universities in cutting-edge research and the promotion of young researchers.

„Through the interaction between the arts, humanities and sciences in a very confined space, research at the UdK Berlin develops innovative interdisciplinary paradigms and methods that set standards in their radicalism. ”

International anchoring of the UdK Berlin in Europe and worldwide

Due to the broad spectrum of its study programmes, the UdK Berlin has an outstanding position worldwide as a "university for all the arts". This is reflected in the diverse international relationships in Europe and worldwide with art academies, music conservatories, dance or drama schools, as well as with creative arts or scientific faculties of large full universities. Among the 164 active international partner universities of the UdK Berlin, two thirds are in Europe. The exchange activities in the EU area are financed through the ERASMUS+ programme, global exchanges e.g. through the Swiss-European Mobility Programme, the US-Fulbright scholarship, the German-French Youth Office, various DAAD scholarships or from University funds. The UdK Berlin is committed to refugee students and works as an active member in several international networks on the future of higher arts education.

„A semester abroad, international study trips or internships have a lasting professional and personal impact. They strengthen transnational and intercultural awareness and global cohesion.”
