      Students are to be qualified on the basis of the acquired competences, i.e., knowledge, qualifications and attitudes in the various sub-disciplines of Catholic theology, for academic work and socially responsible practice of the teaching profession. Some of the main objectives of a university education in the subject area of Catholic Religion include:
      - Knowledge of biblical scholarship, the origins and setting of the Bible\;
      - Ability to engage in historical-hermeneutical reflection through the examination of the history of Christianity and its European
      development\;
      - Reflection and independent penetration of the contents of faith on the basis of the central contents of Christian faith and its history\;
      - Competence of logical analysis and argumentative discussion of philosophical problems and other religions\;
      - Ability to implement subject-specific content through knowledge of the forms and places of religious activity in religious education at school\;
      - Qualification to think through religious faith positions and make them speakable, to discuss theological topics and to convey theological questions
      and topics.

      Research focuses

      The subject Catholic Religion consists of the following subject areas and contents:

      - In biblical scholarship, the contents, the literary genesis and the cultural and religious-historical environment of the Bible are taught.
      - In the historical sub-disciplines, students deal with the 2000-year history of Christianity and the associated
      European development and are enabled to reflect historically and hermeneutically.
      - In the systematic subjects, students learn about the central contents of the Christian faith. They will be able to
      penetrate and reflect on the content of faith hermeneutically, systematically and historically and to understand it in its context.
      - To this end, they also deal with philosophical problems, practise logical analysis and argumentative debate.
      - They learn about other religions (especially Judaism and Islam) and are able to engage in interreligious dialogue.
      - In the practical disciplines, students learn the ability to implement the subject-specific scientific content in school religious education.
