  • Field of study
    • Target group Bachelor's graduates of the subjects of Land Management or Landscape Planning
    • kind of Master course according to the KMK consecutive

    • Annotation of the Higher Education Institution Central challenges of our society are climate change, the decline of biodiversity, socio-ecological transformations and health. Those who choose this Master's degree programme will deal scientifically with these challenges and develop creative and innovative concepts for a sustainable and liveable environment in the city and in rural areas.

Existing ideas are to be critically examined and further thought through, and new ideas are to be tested and discussed. We are working in various Master's specialising on design, planning concepts and scientifically based strategies for future spaces. Master graduates act in a social context: They analyse, develop and design landscapes and urban open spaces as functional and identification spaces.

The Master's degree programme is research-oriented in its profile and is capable of scientific work as well as reflected planning and design. An important goal of this degree is the acquisition of the so-called "chamber ability", because only members of the architects' and planners' chambers have access to all the possibilities of the profession. Based on current questions from research and practice, an in-depth basic knowledge is taught at the University of Kassel in four semesters. Graduates work in a structural-spatial or strategic-conceptual context. They apply their design, planning, conceptual and scientific knowledge and skills in complex and interdisciplinary contexts.

Four Master's specialisations contribute to an individual study profile and help to orientate to the requirements of different professional fields. Students can specialise in the areas of "landscape architecture and open space planning", "landscaping and plant use", "environmental planning and landscape management" and "urban design".

Part-time study is quite possible due to the course of study in this degree course. Upon request, you can register for part-time studies in accordance with Section 19 (2) Hesse Higher Education Act (HessHG). The specific provisions for part-time studies will then apply. Counselling by the subject-specific student advice service is recommended.

    The University of Ideas

The University of Kassel is a young and dynamic institution with a wide range of offerings in the natural sciences and engineering, in the social sciences and the humanities as well as in the arts. The University sees itself as an institution at which openness, initiative, interdisciplinary thinking and unconventional approaches are all prized and promoted. This applies to studying, research and teaching as well as to business start-ups, which receive a distinctive degree of support at the University of Kassel. The University is exceedingly well connected in the North Hessen region and in the city of Kassel, one of the economically and culturally most dynamic cities of Germany.

In its approach to teaching, the University of Kassel places particular emphasis on establishing a close connection to real-life applications. Academic qualifications should be directly related to problem-solving capabilities, to openness for professional developments and to practical social skills. A wide range of courses is offered across areas such as the natural sciences, technology, cultural and social studies. Teacher training is also a traditional strength of the University.

    Research

At the University of Kassel, scholars, scientists and students confront the big questions of our future – from the effects of globalisation, to managing climate change and sustainable economic systems, to developing new materials and technical systems. The aim here is to develop, test and implement ideas – even when these ideas haven't yet made it to the mainstream. This often calls for an innovative combination of basic research and practical applications as well as interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches.
