In the major subject "Indology" you study the Indian cultural area, which extends beyond the geographical area of the Indian subcontinent (South Asia). One central aspect of the Indology course is the approach of using the original languages of the sources. The combination of Sanskrit and Hindi has proven successful. Sanskrit as the most important ancient language, which is of particular significance for religious history and pre-colonial studies; Hindi as a supra-regional language, which is highly relevant both as a source language and as an academic language. In Marburg, it is also possible to combine Sanskrit with Tibetan or – unique in Europe – with Classical Newar.
In Indology, the philological approach means that work is always carried out with primary texts. A very good sense of language is therefore indispensable. You also study, for example, Buddhism and its spread to Central, East and Southeast Asia, as well as the cultural relations between India and Europe.

An integral part of the degree course is the MarSkills programme, in which you acquire attractive and future-oriented key skills (see www.uni-marburg.de/marskills).
