    Modern Greek Studies

  • Field of study
    • Target group Greek Philology deals with the literary work of Greek culture from Homer to the Late Antiquity as well as the impact of these texts up to the present day. In addition to consolidating their Greek language competence, the students of the MA Greek degree course are to acquire profound knowledge in the history of ancient Greek literature and in the methods of the subject. This includes solid skills in the interpretation of ancient texts, knowledge of ancient cultural history and area studies, as well as the acquisition of working methods of related ancient-studies disciplines. The acquired skills are to be applied within the framework of the Master’s thesis to a key area, chosen by the student, in Greek literature. Students will study central authors (e.g. Homer, Hesiod, Archaic Poetry, Sophocles, Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle, Callimachus, Plutarch, Lucian and philosophical authors of the imperial age and Late Antiquity, such as Iamblichus and Proclus)\; both literary and cultural methods and approaches are applied. In ancient Greek literature, the fundamental European concepts of literature, poetry, history, politics, science, religion, art and philosophy were developed and differentiated. The study of Ancient Greek thus conveys sound core skills, which are relevant to any more advanced study of the fields mentioned.
